"The GRE programme is finding ways to make testing more readily available for individuals around the world to help them succeed," said Dawn Piacentino, director of communications and services for the GRE Program. "If, for example, someone didn't feel they did their best on test day, the 21-day policy now allows them to retake the test quickly and still meet application deadlines," he said.

Previously, candidates who appeared for the exam could take the test only after 31 calendar days. So, the reduction of 10 days might come as boon for the last minute applicants who are at gunpoint for university deadlines.

GRE takers increase by 30% in 2012
Jan 25, 2013

Aspiring to study more followed by the unfavourable and unsatisfactory job scenarios has led to the increase in the number of takers for the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) in 2012. The latest statistics shows that for the year 2012, 85,000 students enrolled for the test as compared to 65,000 in 2011 - a sharp rise of 30%.

Eventhough the GRE exam went through a signifcant change in the paper pattern and the scoring system in 2012, the figures have come out extremely surprising. For many students, studying overseas is always a dream as the TAG is etched on their profile. For some, it's the handsome salary and the royal lifestyle while some geniunely look for quality teaching and pursuing a doctrate/research. Lack of quality instituions in India is a big blot on the entire education system. Our top engineering colleges are at par with their mid rank universities. Moreover, getting a seat abroad is not very difficult, atleast the moderate universities. So, all these factors always prompts an aspiring student to look for overseas education.

Experts estimate that one tenth of the candidates are from Chennai. Delhi and Hyderabad send most number of candidates, followed by Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai. Coaching institutes that train candidates said the test was popular among two segments-engineering, medical and pharmacy graduates, and those who want to pursue a management degree. Most of the univerisites in the USA and other countires have started accepting GRE score for the management courses. So, students who want to keep their options open for technical as well as management courses need not worry about taking management entrance tests like GMAT (though the best schools globally still prefers a GMAT score).

Also, GRE has become a very common exam amongst professionals between 22 to 28 years. The growth in the company is not as fast as it used to be. Moreover, the job market is tight thus making the competition tougher. So, in such cases, best profiles get through and thus many students and professionals pitch on foreign education.

If the education and job market scenario continues to remain the same in India, it is quite possible to see a 50% rise for the GRE test takers in 2013 as compared to 2012.
